How many do you start for 1,000 good parts?

20 October 2026 · Production planning

The customer wants 1,000 good parts. How many do you start? If you start 1,000, you already know how it ends. Some fall out at the first operation, some at the second, and you deliver 883. The rest goes into a second order, after a new changeover and new planning.

A calculation example. 92% good after operation 1, 96% good after operation 2. Then you need over 1,130 pieces for 1,000 good ones. If a restart costs 3 hours at €60, and that happens on 60 of 600 orders a year, that is €10,800, not counting the late delivery.

In Digital WorkMate the production order calculates the start quantity itself, based on the expected yield and scrap per operation. From the history you take over the actual yield of an operation as the new standard.

Indicative calculation example. Not a customer result.
