A paper measurement is an opinion

20 October 2026 · Quality

A paper measurement is an opinion. You only know whether it was right when the customer calls. The operator measures, writes it down, someone else retypes it later. If something is outside tolerance, the company often notices only at delivery.

What does that cost? Say five complaints a year of €3,000 in rework, transport, credit and hours. That is €15,000. If you stop 60% of that at the source, you save €9,000. Add paperwork: 2,400 orders a year with 5 minutes of retyping is 200 extra hours.

With a measurement step with tolerance in the system, it works differently. The operator records the value at the machine. If it falls outside tolerance, the order cannot continue and a non-conformance report starts. That is how it works in Digital WorkMate.

Indicative calculation example. Not a customer result.
